Bollywood, along with its love of the sports biopics, has a special affinity for historical films.
Mohenjo Daro is the latest example of that fact. But even before that this genre is something filmmakers seem to never get tired of.
Here is the list of best historical films Bollywood has ever produced:
1. Jodhaa Akbar

The team of Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan has already produced an historical epic in the form of Jodhaa Akbar. The beautifully shot drama had terrific performances and blended action and drama perfectly.
2. Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India

Ashutosh Gowariker loves going back in time. This historical fiction sports drama was one of the biggest risks an Indian filmmaker had ever taken. And boy, did that pull off!
3. The Legend of Bhagat Singh

In a year that had three films about Bhagat Singh, this was the one that really caught the eye. The film showed the lengths to which freedom-seekers went in order to get what they want. Ajay Devgn still hasn't given a better performance than his role as the the freedom fighter.
4.Chittagong

This film about Chittagong uprising was missed by many as it was released opposite Abhishek Bachchan-Deepika Padukone starrer Khelen Hum Jee Jaan Se (another Gowariker film). But the film was lauded by critics, won a National award and is a must see for every cinema lover.
5.Bajirao Mastani

This Sanjay Leela Bhansali film about Maratha emperor Bajirao I was one of the best films of 2015. The trio of Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra gave performances of the highest order.
6.Mughal-e-Azam

One of the first films of its kind, Mughal-e-Azam remains a classic in the historical category. The film about the love affair of Akbar's son Salim with court dancer Anarkali became the first black-and-white Hindi film to be digitally coloured and re-released.
